Erin Hill plays tribute to David Bowie – a local Concert Review

I had the privilege of seeing Erin Hill perform the music of David Bowie at Randy Now’s Man Cave in Bordentown, New Jersey on Saturday night, January 28th, 2017.

I was very impressed and had a wonderful time.  Erin Hill’s harp playing is nothing short of outstanding and her singing is remarkable.  She decided and told the audience that she would go in chronological order which I thought was a great way to perform the show and to honor David Bowie’s brilliant song-writing through the years.

Erin Hill kicked off the 7:00pm first show with “The Man Who Sold The World” from Bowie’s 1970 album of the same name.  She went on to do an amazing rendition of “Life on Mars?” from the Hunk Dory album of 1971 which was absolutely brilliant.

From the highly acclaimed and magnificent The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars album of 1972, she performed wonderful versions of “Moonage Daydream,” “Starman,” and “Ziggy Stardust.”  I thought all three renditions of those songs were nothing short of amazing.  As Hill played flawlessly with her hands on her beautiful harp, I especially admired her performances of “Moonage Daydream” and “Starman.”  I loved how Erin Hill sang those wonderful, beautiful lyrics, “There’s a Starman waiting in the sky, he’d like to come and meet us, but he thinks he’d blow our minds…”

As Erin Hill moved through David Bowie’s catalog, she provided us with a beautiful cover of David Bowie’s cover of The Beatles’ “Across The Universe” which appeared on Bowie’s Young Americans album in 1975.  Up next, came a classic from the 1976 Station to Station , album where she performed a lovely rendition of “Golden Years.”  That too, in my opinion, was one of Erin Hill’s best of the night.

Another “cover of a cover” Bowie song happened as Erin Hill played “God Only Knows,” originally done by The Beach Boys on their Pet Sounds album, it was done exceptionally well with Hill’s brilliant singing and amazing harp playing.

Hill would play one song from Bowie’s 2016 album Blackstar, which was released on his birthday and just two days before he died.  The song titled “Dollar Days” was, once again, performed brilliantly by Hill, who didn’t seem to tire at all, and her harp playing and singing were amazing all night.

For the encore, Hill gave the audience her wonderful rendition of Bowie’s masterpiece “Space Oddity,” which ended her first show appearance at this little record shop in the heart of Bordentown, New Jersey.

See a copy of that performance below:

As I witnessed Erin Hill’s brilliance, I was also reminded of David Bowie’s brilliance and how much of a creative and talented musician he was.  Bowie gave us a lifetime of amazing songs to be cherished forever.  If Bowie knew that his songs would be played by a truly talented, beautiful harpist and singer, I am sure he would be smiling and would be very pleased.

After the show, I was also able to get a signed autographed copy of Erin Hill and her Psychedelic Harp – Girl Inventor CD which is a 2013 Independent Music Award winner. The album comprises 10 original sci-fi pop songs written by Erin, and featuring vocals, electric harp, bass, drums, cello, and pedal steel. (

Most Annoying Compilation Albums

Here is a list of some of my most annoying Compilation Albums:

Aerosmith – Aerosmith’s Greatest Hits:Aerosmith's Greatest HitsThis greatest hits compilation is horrible with cut up versions of “Sweet Emotion” and “Kings and Queens”. It also lacks “Train Kept A Rollin'” from Get Your Wings album.

Aerosmith – The Essential Aerosmith:
Like Aerosmith’s Greatest Hits it lacks “Train Kept A Rollin’,” and has two new songs that are not very good plus the duet with Run D.M.C. of “Walk This Way.” Too much 80’s and 90’s Aerosmith and not enough 1970’s Aerosmith in my opinion.

Beastie Boys – Anthology: The Sounds Of Science:r-1392922-1429388091-8339-png

“No Sleep Till Brooklyn” was left out on this compilation which is unforgiveable to me.

Creedence Clearwater Revival Featuring John Fogerty – Chronicle: The 20 Greatest Hits:r-2132196-1265768940-jpeg
Left out “Born on the Bayou” which apparently was on Chronicle Vol. 2 but should have been on the original.

Grateful Dead* – The Very Best Of Grateful Dead:r-2103653-1287511396-jpeg
Would have been better if it didn’t omit such classics as “St. Stephen,” “Scarlet Begonias,” “Good Lovin’,” “Shakedown Street,” and “Turn on Your Love Light.”

Lenny Kravitz – Greatest Hits:r-2939959-1308272608-jpeg
The compilation included the new song “Again” but left out “Spinning Around Over You” from the Reality Bites Soundtrack, plus “Fields of Joy” from the album Mama Said, and “Is There Any Love in Your Heart” from Are You Gonna Go My Way album. It also should have been in chronological order instead of all mixed up.

Ray Charles – Genius: The Ultimate Ray Charles Collection:r-1739408-1240258352-jpeg
A great collection but oddly it doesn’t include his first hit “Mess Around” which is very upsetting to me.

Stevie Ray Vaughan And Double Trouble* – Greatest Hits:r-1864077-1248651649-jpeg
The fine compilation is great but sadly it omitted “The Sky is Cryin’.” How do you do that?

U2 – The Best Of 1990-2000:r-1421092-1218293454-jpeg
This “Best Of” compilation has new songs on it and remixes instead of the originals. It also omits “Walk On” which is one of the best songs from the album All That You Can’t Leave Behind (2000).

Van Halen – Best Of Volume I:r-466459-1247464641-jpeg
Includes two new songs with David Lee Roth which are fine but no tracks from Diver Down are on this compilation.  Also no “Hot For Teacher” or “I’ll Wait” from the album 1984. Dumb.

Van Halen – The Best Of Both Worlds:
It could have been so easy to do a 2-CD compilation of Van Halen with Disc 1 containing songs from David Lee Roth era (1978-1984) and Disc 2 containing songs from the Sammy Hagar era (1986-1996) but no that would be too smart and easy. Instead they have tracks from all years all over the place along with new songs with David Lee Roth. Horrible. Makes no sense.

The Who – The Ultimate Collection:r-831764-1163308779-jpeg
A great compilation but it also should have included the song “Relay.”

ZZ Top – The Very Baddest:r-6020253-1408993326-6224-jpeg
A fine collection but my main complaint is that it should have been in chronological order instead of all mixed- up.
